about

Written way way back in 1985 when Leroi Z Coondawg was in the grip of Jason & The Scorchers' revved-up country punk masterpiece "Lost & Found" (ef you ain't got it, go git it).

For a couple of months Leroi listened to nothing else, and it shows here. The main boxes of Scorcherdom are crudely ticked - careering pace, tortured subject matter and a metaphor stretched well beyond breaking point. The result is a poor Leodhasach imitation of the real thing, but hell - we like playing it even if it ain't much fun for anyone else to listen to.

"Chaingang" was played live back in the 80s by MLATRFOD predecessors the Subterraneans, and Memphis Louie an the Rockin FirebirdS of Death. But it didn't get the studio treatment until this here version.

The best live outing it got was in 2010 when, by a strange twist of fate, MLATRFOD supported Jason Scorcher himself at the Loft in Forres. Leroi reckoned he'd better apologise in advance for any similarity to Scorchers songs living or dead, in case Jason thought we were taking the p***. Luckily he's a very nice man - he didn't kick our a**es or sue us and he even got Memphis & Leroi up to do backing vocals on a few songs.

lyrics

Well I’m standin’ at the truckstop – carryin my old gunny sack
An to keep myself from goin back
Got my whisky by my side
Gonna find myself a North bound truck – gonna go up to Chicago
Gonna take my whisky with me girl – and leave you far behind

(chorus)
Cos your love is a chain gang
With Passion as the warder
Keepin me in order – with a shotgun fulla lust
Your love is a chain gang
With whisky as the waterboy
Keepin me just on this side – of Satan’s ragin’ thirst

Well I’m a rollin up the interstate – tryin to think of somethin else
But Ronnie Self’s on the radio – an he’s singin’ ‘bout you
18 wheels on the highway – sound just like you when you say
Come back to me baby I promise to be good

Chorus

Well I’m a standin in Chicago, carryin my old gunny sack
Oh help me Lord I’m goin’ back though I know I’m doin’ wrong
The hound dogs and the deputiiiiies of your memoryyyyy caughtupwith me
I’m in the black and white of your cheatin’ heart and now I’m comin’ home

Chorus

Chorus (acapella)

Chorus (Frantic)

about

Memphis Louie & The Rockin' Firebird Of Death Sandwick, UK

Emerging after 18 years of silence from the ashes of the Outer Hebrides' 60s garage band scene (which happened in the 80s), MLATRFOD formed in 2003 in the cac filled swamps between Stornoway and Sandwick. They've been mixing up a mess of fuzztone-crazed garage psych, Link Wrayabilly and glacial post punk ever since, and taking their time about it. Their names are too long to fit in a Bandcamp bio ... more
